10 Signs You May Have Crawl Space Problems
Many homeowners don’t go in their crawl space. Often an issue in the crawl space is brought to the homeowner’s attention by a service person going under the home to maintain HVAC equipment, perform an inspection, or fix a leak. Usually, by the time the homeowner is aware of an issue in the crawl space, mold is growing on the joists, insulation is wet, damaged, and falling, and the vapor barrier is damaged or barely there. Pests, rodents, and snakes have found their home in the crawl space, just under the homeowner’s feet, and a lot of work needs to be done to clean it up.
So, what are signs a homeowner should look for outside of the crawl space that may indicate a problem under the home?
- Water sitting against the foundation walls
- Bouncy, buckling, soft, or popping floors
- Sticking doors and windows
- Musty odors inside the home
- Irritated allergies or asthma in the home
- High humidity in the home
- Mold inside the home
- Termite, rodent, or pest problems
- Drafts and cold floors in the winter
- High energy bills
If you notice one or all of these symptoms in your home, your house is trying to tell you it needs help. Excess moisture under the home results in damaged insulation and microbial growth and in extreme or untreated cases, it can even lead to wood rot, compromising the structure of your home.
